Our Outstanding Faculty

Robert E. Averbach, DDS, FICD, FACD, is a Professor of Endodontics, President’s Teaching Scholar, Outstanding Didactic Professor of the Year, and recipient of the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry where he served as Dean from 1989 to 1998. A Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a practicing endodontist, he is a prolific contributor to scientific journals and textbooks, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Journal of Endodontics, a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association and a clinical consultant for THE DENTAL ADVISOR.
Adam Chen, DDS, received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1979 and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from University of California at Los Angeles in 1983. Dr. Chen has been in private practice for the last twenty eight years in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles. Dr. Chen is the co-founder of Cyber Medical Imaging, Inc. He is the principal in charge of development of the clinical ergonomics on the XDR graphic user interface. He has contributed to the clinical design, testing, and validation of the XDR software; and he is involved in the development of new clinical concepts and applications in dental imaging hardware and software. Dr. Chen is also in charge of the clinical training program for XDR, and development of various training material in multi-media. In addition he is involved in the XDR continuing education program given through study clubs, professional organizations, and educational institutions.
Barry S. Goldenberg, DMD, MS, has been restoring implants since 1986 in his St. Louis County private practice, which is limited to Prosthodontics and Implant Reconstruction. During his lectures on restoring dental implants, he explores computer utilization in the diagnosis and treatment planning for implant dentistry. Dr. Goldenberg is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, the ADA and the Academy of Osseointegration. He is also a Fellow in the ICOI and a Master in the IPS section of the ICOI.
Lonnie R. Johnson, DDS, PhD, is a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar, Associate Dean of Clinical Operations and Patient Relations, Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Surgical Dentistry, and Chair of the Division of Periodontics, University of Colorado Denver School of Dental Medicine. He received his D.D.S., Certificate in Periodontics and Ph.D. in Biological Structure from the University of Washington Schools of Dentistry and Medicine. He has received numerous academic and teaching awards including Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and University of Colorado Health Sciences Center President's Award for Teaching Excellence (1987, 1991, 1995, 2002, 2003) and Chancellors Award for Teaching Excellence (1994, 2005, 2009).
Uche Odiatu, DMD, is a practicing dentist, a lifelong athlete, an NSCA certified trainer and best-selling wellness author of the books Fit for the LOVE of It and The Miracle of Health. He has inspired people with his insights, humor & energy on national TV (including ABC’s 20/20) and radio (KFAR Alaska to WGST Atlanta). Dr Odiatu has presented scientific programs for the last six years at ADA annual sessions, three times at AGD annual sessions and twice at the Chicago Mid-Winter Meeting. Nelson L. Rhodus. DMD, MPH, FACD, FICD, is Distinguished Professor and Chair of Oral Medicine, Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Otolaryngology, School of Medicine, and Attending Faculty University of Minnesota Comprehensive Cancer Center. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Certre College, his D.M.D. from the University of Kentucky, did post-graduate work at Harvard University and Oral Roberts University, and received his M.P.H. and Oral Medicine certification of the University of Minnesota. He is an attending member of the Hospital Staff of the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics, the Minnesota Cancer Center and a consultant to the Veteran's Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center and has been on the faculty for the past 20 years. At the University of Minnesota, he directs several Physical evaluation and Oral Pathology courses and is active in research with oral manifestations of systemic disease, burning mouth, and chronic degenerative autoimmune diseases. In addition, he serves on the national medical advisory board of the national Sjogren's Syndrome Association.
Jamison Spencer, DMD, MS, is adjunct faculty at the Craniofacial Pain Center at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He is also adjunct faculty in the anatomy department at Boise State University. Dr. Spencer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, a Diplomate of the American Board of Craniofacial Pain and currently serves as the President of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (becoming President in August of 2010). Dr. Spencer is a Diplomate of the Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and a credentialed member of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Spencer teaches head and neck anatomy at Boise State University and teaches courses to dentists and physicians nationally and internationally on the topics of craniofacial pain, TMJ disorders, head and neck anatomy and dental sleep medicine. Dr. Spencer is the director of the Craniofacial Pain Center of Idaho in Boise and the Craniofacial Pain Center of Colorado in Arvada. Doug Yoon, DDS, has a unique background in both dentistry and advanced computer imaging technology, having received his degree in Mathematics from UC Berkeley in 1973 and his DDS from UCLA in 1983. Dr. Yoon has been a senior scientist in the aerospace industry for over 25 years and has over 14 years experience in dental digital radiography in private industry and as an adjunct research faculty member in the Section of Oral Radiology at the UCLA School of Dentistry. While in industry Dr. Yoon developed Logicon Caries Detector, the first FDA approved computer aided diagnosis program, for which he holds a U.S. patent. Dr. Yoon's research at UCLA includes the areas of digital radiographic subtraction and density calibration, dental ultrasound imaging and computer aided diagnosis of osteoporosis from dental radiographs (Dr. Stuart White, PI). In addition, Dr. Yoon is the founder and CTO of Cyber Medical Imaging, Inc., a private company through which he has developed the dental digital radiographic system called XDR.
